Odour Management

Odour is a sensory response to the chemicals in the inhaled air. Air quality is affected not only due to conventional air pollutants but also due to unpleasant odours. The usual effect of bad odours is nuisance, but in more serious cases it may lead to feelings of nausea and headache and to other symptoms that appear to be related to stress. Odour pollution has distinctly different characteristics and is undoubtedly the more complex of all the air pollution problems.

Till date, not much attention has been paid towards odour problems in the country. Considering the likely increase in odour problems in the country. the central pollution control board (CPCB) constituted an expert committee on odour pollution and its control, to look into the extent of problem, its measurement, control and regulation aspects.

The guidelines deals with the basics of odour pollution, its sources, measurement, control technologies, case studies in India and international regulations and legislations.

Legacy Waste Removal

Although the term “legacy waste” has not been defined in any official government document in India, it typically refers to aged municipal solid waste in landfills or dumpsites. There is no information on how old waste must be in order to qualifybe called legacy waste. Legacy waste is a mix of partially or completely decomposed biodegradable waste, plastic waste, textiles, metals, glass and other components.

It is important to note that legacy waste dumpsite remediation projects in India concern themselves not only with legacy waste dumpsites but also with any unscientifically managed dumpsite that is relatively young. The agenda is to clear unscientifically designed and mismanaged dumpsites that might be causing or can cause long-term environmental and public health hazards.

Eco-friendly product manufacturing and its use can significantly affect a sustainable green economy. High CO2 emissions through different resources, such as excessive crude oil consumption and plastic products or other environmentally unfriendly materials, cause damage to the ecological system.Turning consumers’ behaviour toward the use of eco-friendly products is a challenge. If people are successfully motivated to buy and use eco-friendly products, the dream of a sustainable green economy can be achieved.

EPR is a producer-focused mechanism that aims to reduce waste, particularly plastic waste, by increasing recycling and decreasing dependency on new raw materials. EPR moves the cost of managing postuse products partially or fully from local governments to the producing industry. It is based on the “polluter pays” principle, making waste producers responsible for the recycling and disposal of their waste.
